When visiting
Cork, the second largest city in Ireland, you will find a lively and
vibrant place, with lots of pubs, cafes and restaurants from which to choose.
You may well want to visit the English Market, on Grand Parade/Princes
St., to buy your groceries, fresh bread and coffee from a tremendous selection
in this atmospheric food hall. Go upstairs to Farmgate Cafe, a great place
for a self service lunch (for waiter service it may be best to make a reservation.

Michael's, 71 Patrick St. Tel: 021 427 7716, is an excellent bistro
style restaurant in the main shopping street, and Proby's Bistro on the
riverside at Proby's Quay, Crosses Green is also worth a visit. Tel: 021 431 6531.
Ivory Tower, 35 Princes St. Tel: 021 427 4665 also comes highly recommended,
with its ecletic choice of dishes.
A pint of guiness while listening to traditional Irish music may be found at
An Spailpin Fanach in South Main St., but if jazz is your preference, the
Metropole Hotel in MacCurtain St. is a good choice. (In October each year,
Cork has a great Jazz Festival) Go to the converted wine warehouse La
Bodega, in Cornmarket St. if you like a place that's busy and loud.
For up to date music and cinema venues look in the Cork Examiner, or the Evening
Echo.
To telephone Cork from abroad, dial your international
access code, then 353, and miss out the first zero of the number.
