There are plenty of good restaurants in Scotland's capital. Many have a good value lunch time menu, and of course there's an international flavour. For Mexican dishes, try Viva Mexico on Cockburn St. Tel: 0131 226 5145. Pizzas are good value and interesting at Mama's Pizza at Grassmarket Elephant House Cafe at 21 George lV Bridge is popular for coffee, and Elephant's Sufficiency at 170 High Street can fill you up at lunch time.

For an evening out Martin's at 70 Rose St. Tel: 0131 225 3106 must be worth a visit. Jackson's, at 2 Jackson Close, High St. Tel: 0131 225 1793 has traditional Scottish fare in an intimate atmosphere. For Indian specialities it's hard to beat the good value Kalpna, 2 St. Patrick's Square Tel: 0131 667 9890.

Many restaurants close Sunday and Monday, apart from Festival time, so telephone first.

You'll have a lot of watering holes to choose from, but you might try the Ceilidh House, Hunter Square, where there may be traditional music as well. Harry's Bar, 7B Randolph Place, is a popular venue. For real ales go to Bow Bar, 80 West Bow, Grassmarket, and for whiskies try Malt Shovel Inn at 13 Cockburn St.

For nightlife hot clubs are Cafe Graffiti, East London St. or L'Attache Nightclub beneath the Rutland Hotel in Rutland St.
