For a special lunch date, why not try the Fourth Floor Cafe at Harvey Nichols department store, the first to open outside London. Tel: 0113 204 8000. There is also an espresso bar on the ground floor.

For a terrific range of real ales, go to the Duck & Drake on Kirkgate, or grab a pint and some pub grub at Whitelocks, off Bridgate. There are lots of fashionable cafe-bars, but you might mix with the in-crowd at Indie Joze in Victoria Quarter. For good Indian food go to Darbour, 16 Kirkgate tel: 0113 246 0381.

The fashionable Pool Court at 42, in the centre of Leeds, could be the place for an evening out. Dine in the now elegant surroundings which was once the warehouse district by the river.

If you fancy the nightlife, Majestyk in the City Square, and Club Uropa in Bridgate could be the places to be seen.

If your not just in Leeds to go to Headingley for the cricket (Tel: 0113 278 7394) visit Tetley's Brewery Wharf, celebrating the history of the English Pub. There is also a place to eat at the riverside cafe bar.
