Well, it is
London, England's capital, so we'll start with Afternooon Tea. Where more famous
than the Ritz? You have to book, and there is a dress code. Tel: 020 7493 8181

the Queen's grocer, Fortnum & Mason. Tel: 020 7734 8040.
There is a myriad of places to eat throughout the day in London, but Pizza
Express is often a good bet and the one at 10 Dean St. (Tube: Tottenham Court Road)
may well have a great jazz accompaniment. Take the same tube station for Museum
Street Cafe, 47 Museum St. Tel: 020 7405 3211. This excellent cafe/restaurant is
also open for breakfast.
There's been a church on this site from as early the 11th. century, and the crypt
has seen many uses, including Cafe in the Crypt, where you can get a good lunch (inc.
vegetarian) in somewhat unusual surroundings. St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church, Trafalger
Square (Tube: Charing Cross).
Sir Terence Conran has a number of restaurants in London, but Mezzo is a fun place
to dine, and this big and busy venue is well worth a visit. 100 Wardour St. Tel: 020 7314
4000 (Tube: Leicester Square). You could also try Le Pont de la Tour, at Butler's Wharf
Tel: 020 7403 8403 (Tube: Tower Hill). Overlooking Tower Bridge, it's great in summer
when a table outside can be magic.
For enjoyable but inexpensive food, try Chelsea Kitchen at 98 King's Road,
Tel: 020 7589 1330 (Tube: Sloane Square). Needless to say, it's usually crowded! If you're
looking for pre-theatre dining, there's Orso, at 27 Wellington St. Tel: 020 7240 5269
(Tube: Covent Garden), or Joe Allen, 13 Exeter St. Tel: 020 7836 0651.
You will not be at a loss to find a pub, or a bar, in London, so we'll make just a
few suggestions maybe worth a detour. The George Inn, 77 Borough High St. (Tube:
London Bridge), The Lamb & Flag in Covent Garden, the Museum Tavern opposite
the British Museum, and Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in the City at 145 Fleet St.
Clubs and other entertainments are extensive, and can change often - check in the press
or Time Out, a weekly publication of venues and hot spots. A lot of the pubs
and bars close surprisingly early, at 11.00pm. For late night venues and nightclubs, it's
well worth a call first to see what's on.
