National Railway Museum in York and Jorvik Viking Centre

You can get a bite to eat in the cafe while visiting the fascinating (even if you're not a train spotter) National Railway Museum in Leeman Road. If you decide to wait for a more traditional cafe, stroll back towards the town centre and try Betty's, a popular place for tea and snacks in St. Helen's square. If you want something a little more substantial for lunch, go to Pierre Victoire at 2 Lendal Tel. 01904 655222.

Most pubs would also serve food, and the Lowther Arms at Cumberland St. is a good bet. The oldest pub is the Black Swan, Peasholme Green, which dates from the 16th. century.

Keeping with the historic atmosphere of York, you could dine at 19 Grape Lane Tel. 01904 636366, a popular restaurant in the heart of the town. Another venue, with a place outdoors for those summer evenings, would be Oscar's Wine Bar, in Little Stonegate Tel. 01904 652002.

Pizza Express in Museum St., has the usual good range of pizza, in pleasant surroudings.

If you don't mind waiting in line, the Jorvik Viking Centre is a great place to take the family, and is usually a must for families visiting York.

To telephone York from abroad, dial your international access code, then 44, and miss out the first zero of the number.
